Located between Queens and the Bronx, 13 acre North Brother Island was used as a hospital complex to quarantine and treat people suffering from smallpox and typhoid fever. In the 1950’s it was turned into a rehab center. The entire island has been abandoned since 1963.

In his book "Typhoid Mary" Anthony Bourdain tells the true story of an Irish maid who carried typhoid fever and was institutionalized at the Riverside Hospital where she spent the remainder of her life.

  1. I've read Typhoid Mary, It's a fascinating book which raises a lot of interesting moral and ethical issues.

  2. I read it way back in 2004. Here's what I wrote about it: An interesting take on this turn of the century real life “super spreader”. I read it just after the SARS epidemic so it resonated strongly. (note: World of Wonders is a terrific novel about the plague in Britain that deals with the same theme).
