On This Day in 1957 - The Little Rock Nine

On Sept. 4, 1957, the Arkansas National Guard, under the order of Arkansas Gov. Orval Faubus, blocked nine black students from entering Little Rock Central High School.

This image is etched on my brain and I see it each year when the first day of school rolls around. I still find it hard to believe that sane people could have behaved the way that angry, jeering mob did and my heart goes out to these brave children.
