JFK and Jackie in a photobooth, c.1953

I'd never seen these photos. They look like they're in love, don't they?

  1. Hmm. Not so very much, I'd say.

If only she'd known what was to come.
Oh. No, I don't mean Dallas, I mean the way he would cheat on her at every opportunity. And be pretty beastly to women in general.

I wonder, if JFK had not caught that bullet, if he'd be viewed now as some sort of tragic messiah, or if his less palatable secrets might have taken the shine off that image?

  2. My parents divorced when I was just a little girl and I was pretty upset about it. One of the nuns who taught me said, "Remember that they must have been very much in love once." It changed the way I looked at my parents who were very bitter towards each other at that time.
Because JFK was of Irish descent my family considered him a saint. Ever the contrarian, I disagreed and took perverse pleasure when his peccadilloes became public. He was a serial philanderer and probably a poor president. But seeing him looking affectionately at his wife in a presumably unguarded moment reminded me of the fragility and impermanence of love.
