Reinstate the Bellamy Salute? I don't think so.

Not long ago I posted an article about The Bellamy Salute, the original hand gesture (with my name) used to accompany the Pledge of Allegiance to the American flag. Apparently there is an online petition to reinstate it:

We the undersigned petition for the official recognition and reinstatement of the Bellamy Salute as the civilian salute to the flag of the United States of America during the reading of the Pledge of Allegiance. Francis Bellamy authored the Pledge and devised the gesture which accompanied it, as such a reading of the Pledge with some other gesture (such as hand over one's heart) goes against the Roman Republican spirit of the Pledge itself. We the undersigned reject the use of the hand-over-heart gesture designated by Congress in 1942 in The United States Flag Code [Section 1 of Title 4 of the United States Code (4 U.S.C. § 1 et seq)].

FYI the Niagara on the Lake Bellamys won't be signing the petition any time soon.
