My mother's tree peony eludes her. Over twenty or so years, she's seen it flower about twice. Oh yes, she sees it bud, but somehow she's always away somewhere else, and the tree peony is a shortlived flower. Three days is about the longest it holds those petals. This year she missed it too, and it may well be the last year she's capable of appreciating it. I photographed it for her, but that's small consolation. The flowers were fragrant, scented, no unpleasant smell at all.
Peonies! Even the name is pretty.

Tree peonies are so gorgeous but they have an unpleasant smell.

The white one smelled fine and the new yellow one didn't bloom at all. Perhaps it's just the one specimen that's overdressed and foul smelling.
