Cats in Buenos Aires

I took the photo above in the botanical gardens in Buenos Aires where there are huge numbers of stray cats despite signs like this:

  1. This issue with the cats in the Botanical Garden in Buenos Aires has been going for years. It's very unfortunate, but so deep into Argentine culture that some aspects of this situation have become part of the Argentine slang.

For example, a slang Argentine word for hookers is 'cats' (particularly for those who appear on TV claiming to be actresses or 'vedettes'). It's not uncommon to hear people say that these ladies live at the Botanical Garden...

The problem is that no government (local or national) has done anything about this situation in years, and the cat population continues to grow...

Regards from Waterloo, Ont. I love the title of your blog!

  2. Thanks for the comment Gabriel. I loved your country.

I noticed that many people leave food out and some of the cats are quite affectionate. We stayed nearby in Palermo and always made sure to come home through the park so we could spend some time sitting on a bench and enjoying some feline company. Some of them had received medical care - I noticed a couple with shaved stomachs and stitches.
