Childhood and Youth

Stephen Shames can identify with the children’s suffering. This makes him an insider; what defines his work is the unusual access, intimacy and trust he establishes with his subjects. The work never feels exploitive, and is often so direct that it’s disarming. Shames’ photography is about the human condition, about finding solutions, ending the suffering, healing and redemption. Shames was ahead of the curve; he was one of the first photographers to start a non-profit organization. Says Shames: “Let’s not just cover the suffering. Let’s stop it.
