Some dogs are heroes, others are not
These courageous canines were inducted into the Purina Hall of Fame yesterday. They saved lives. My dog, Max, will never be awarded this honour because he is a real bastard. Some of you may have read my posts about the sweet little bunnies in our back yard. We erected barriers around their nest so that Max couldn't stick his big doggy nose in there but Mummy Bunny could still get in to feed the kits. Yesterday the two bunnies decided they were old enough to face the outside world. This turned out to be a severe error of judgment for one lapin. Max saw the opportunity he'd been waiting for and grabbed it in his mouth. I looked out the window and saw Max lying on the grass beside something I hoped was one of his toys. It wasn't. I ran out and the bunny was stretched out on its back, immobile but still breathing. Max is a retriever and has a soft mouth so the bunny suffered no physical injuries but was likely a nervous wreck, having been snatched from the jaws of death. I scooped him up in a towel and placed him back in his nest. He didn't look too good and I'm told a shock like this can kill them. I checked on him a few times and he was breathing and then he was gone! I can't tell you how happy I was that the little guy made it. I just hope he had the sense to hop over to a yard that doesn't have big, brutish dog in it.
