On May 1,1983, Shirley Carr became the first woman president of the Canadian Labour Congress. Carr, a member of the Canadian Union of Public Employees, was also the first candidate with a public-service background to hold the top job. She served two terms. She has always been a leading advocate of women's rights in the workplace and a role model for women in the labour movement.
Carr lives in Niagara Falls so I have been fortunate over the years to have had the opportunity to meet her and to hear her speak about the considerable challenges she faced as Canada's highest ranking female union leader and I was always inspired.
