I came across an article in the St. Catharines Standard about a local woman who adopted four Potcakes. I had never heard about these indigenous Caribbean dogs but found a wealth of information about the breed at sites like Potcake Place and Royal Potcake Rescue.
Although officially considered mixed breed dogs, the Royal Bahamian Potcake is a recognized breed in The Bahamas. They have distinct characteristics of size and temperament. This is because, until very recently, all island dogs shared the same isolated gene pool. This makes the Potcake an extremely unique species of canine.
Here's a flickr set of Potcakes. They sure are cute.
The four puppies where brought back to our city so they would have a chance at life. Three of these girls have been adopted since landing last Wednesday night. two have already been spay and in their new homes. They are gaining weight- wagging their tails and you can see the love and trust in their eyes. Jill did what she had to do- she followed her heart-went back to the island of Exuma with her young son and got those puppies. She set things up so the Mother dogs would be spayed- and brought those pups here. She is a wonderful caring person and what a great life lesson she is teaching her son- and anyone else who took the time to read about these pups-show their support and helped out. There's the story of the puppies on facebook under Potcake rescue. we will continue to return each year to Exuma and bring back what we can. To each person who has run across an animal while on holidays and felt bad about it- remember the Potcakes- and maybe their stories will help you to help an animal some where someday.
