The Pneumatic Clocks of 19th-Century Paris

At the turn of the twentieth century electric clocks  were still a high-tech rarity and installing one in the home would have been prohibitively expensive. Paris had a system of underground pipes with a master clock that sent out bursts of air each minute to synchronize every public clock around the city.
