On this day in 1918 Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela was born to Nosekeni Fanny and Gadla Henry Mphakanyiswa, Chief Counsellor to the Chief of the Tembu tribe. He was arrested and imprisoned in 1962, and was sentenced to life imprisonment for conspiring to overthrow the apartheid state. Mandela served the next 27 years in prison. He became a universal symbol of social justice.
