Flamingos Are Returning To The Sunshine State
A century ago flamingoes were nearly driven to extinction in Florida by hunters seeking their fashionable and costly plumage. Recently birders recorded 101 wild American flamingo sightings across the state in February. Conservationists believe many of these birds were carried into the state on the winds of Hurricane Idalia in August 2023.
