Fra Mauro, a Venetian cartographer-monk of the late Middle Ages created the most accurate world map to that point in human history. Arab traders and world explorers and well-traveled refugees provided him with the details he needed to create the map. The gathering of its contents relied upon the fifteenth-century equivalent of crowdsourcing.
Seems many of the grand difficult undertakings were done by monks. I suspect some became Monks to make sure they would eat tomorrow after spending every today on their project.
