Image: RM Auctions

The 1884 De Dion Bouton Et TrepardouxDos-A-Dos Steam Runabout is the oldest running car on earth. It featured a boiler and a two-cylinder engine and could reach speeds of up to 38 miles per hour. Built by French inventors Georges Bouton and Charles-Armand Trepardoux and Count de Dion,  its undisputed provenance and well documented history brought it $4.62 million dollars at auction in 2011.
