  2. It's been known since the before the Civil War that a Vitamin A deficiency often is the cause of nyctalopia, night blindness. During wartime when diets are restricted this is more likely to happen. So it makes total sense to remind people to eat carrots to prevent night blindness.

    The article criticizes the bad medical advice given during the war but it sound like the author is one of those writing bad medical advice. If you are in a situation where fresh food is scarce, you really should be making sure to eat carrots when they are available.
