Gaudí's Sagrada Familia Cathedral in Barcelona has illuminated the terminals on the towers of the Evangelists Luke and Mark, celebrating the completion of these two new structures that reach 135 meters in height. Together with the tower of the Virgin Mary, inaugurated in December 2021, 3 of the 6 central towers will be completed.
Visiting Sagrada Familia was one of my goals since I first read about it as a kid. I finally got the opportunity to see it fifteen years ago. Construction on the cathedral began in 1882 and has been incomplete for over 140 years. Despite its unfinished state this UNESCO World Heritage Site was awe-inspiring. I'm glad to see it is now much closer to completion.
Looks to me like they expended more labor than it take to build most churches on just scaffolding.

what a giant waste of money, time and effort
ReplyDeleteThe Sagrada Familia has created controversy since well before Gaudí was commissioned to build it in 1883. Since then architects, religious leaders, politicians and residents of the neighbourhood have all weighed in.
