In 1977 Winnebago created the Heli-Home, a complete mobile home that could take to the skies. (There is a rather long ad at the beginning of the video.)
Between Winnebago and Fred’s company about 7 or 8 heli-homes were sold.
He doesn’t mention the expense and difficulty of learning and getting licensed to fly a chopper, nor the restrictions on where you can fly. I remember hearing about a guy in CT who had a small helicopter he used to commute to NYC. One night flying home and behind schedule he decided to land on his property rather than the CT airport and drive back home. The story goes the Feds hit him with a second mortgage size fine. I can’t swear it’s true but certainly believable. I worked 25 years for Boeing Helicopter and I know the amount and cost of maintenance on choppers far exceeds even personal jet aircraft.
