I took my kids to New York about 15 years ago, and seeing this was a surprise to me. Most of the floors have metal escalators. The kids thought that escalators are neat whether they are new or old! Another memory from Macy's is that we needed a restroom. I had the kids looking for signs. One said "I don't see a restroom, but there's a sign that says ladies lounge." Mom and I knew what they meant, but the kids had no clue.
When I was a kid wooden escalators were common. I remember my sister getting an article of her clothing caught in one and the escalator had to be shut down so maintenance men could free her.
