I am currently fascinated by Ise Katagami Stencils that were used to dye coloured designs onto cloth. More recently katagami have come to be appreciated as remarkable and beautiful objects in their own right.

My friend Hanan left a link to the Blog Of The Day feature on his own fabulous but long gone Grow-a-Brain blog as a comment on one of my posts. Going through it was like an archaeological dig into link bloggers of the past. Some quit suddenly, others faded out, a few passed away and some, like me, are still plugging on. I thought some of you blog aficionados might like to take a trip down memory lane

  4. I understand how the Katagami stencils were made but can't figure out how the were used to make the dyed patterns on cloth without the dye wicking through the fabric fibers making the pattern blurred?

  5. The stencils are used for resist dyeing. Rice paste is passed through the stencil onto silk. When the fabric is dyed, the color does not adhere to the areas with rice paste.

  6. Ahh thank you, so the stencil is actually the pattern of the dyed fabric. Very clever.
