L'arbre du Ténéré

The Tree of Ténéré was the only landmark in a hundred mile radius yet a careless driver somehow managed to hit the isolated tree with his truck in 1973. The solitary acacia tree had been a longtime guide for caravans embarking on or returning from crossing the Sahara and even appeared on maps of the desert. The remains of the tree were moved to the Niger National Museum and a metal sculpture representing the tree now stands where the tree once was.
