Joyce Wieland, The Water Quilt, 1970–71 Embroidered cloth and printed cloth assemblage, 134.6 x 131.1 cm, Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto |
Canadian artist Joyce Wieland’s The Water Quilt is a statement about environmental fragility. Each square holds an embroidered, scientifically accurate arctic flower. Beneath each square is a page of printed text from James Laxer’s The Energy Poker Game: The Politics of the Continental Resources Deal, published in 1970 in which Laxer wrote about energy economics and the influence of American multinational corporations on Canadian electric power, oil, water and gas.
