When the Black Death raged across Europe Tuscans came up with a brilliant idea: “wine windows,” or buchette del vino. These were pint-size hatches, carved into the concrete walls of urban wineries and shops, where beverage merchants would serve sips at a safe social distance.
Some Italian wine merchants have decided to revive this plague tradition and are unblocking their existing Wine Windows to dispense drinks and snacks in a safer, contactless way.
