When defending her PhD dissertation, Michigan State University’s Earth and Environmental Sciences student, Caitlin Kirby, turned personal rejections letters, culled from scholarship applications, submissions to academic journals, and proposals for conference presentations, into a badge of honour. Kirby’s power skirt is part of an ongoing campaign to acknowledge rejection as a necessary, if painful, part of academic growth.
