The force of the bend of a piece of spaghetti snaps it in the middle where it is most curved. The break then releases energy back down the pieces of spaghetti in a “snap-back” wave, breaking off smaller lengths of pasta. A team of mathematicians at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology led by Jörn Dunkel has concluded it is possible to snap a strand of spaghetti into just two pieces, provided you add a twist.
