On This Day in 1933



The passage of the Enabling Act in March 1933 allowed Hitler’s government to issue decrees independently of the Reichstag and the presidency. On July 14, 1933 he used this power to pass a law outlawing the formation of new political parties, making the National Socialist German Workers’ Party  the sole and unopposed ruling power and effectively ending parliamentary democracy in the country.
