Winnipeg's Cool 'Warming Huts'

The shape of 2014's "Voyageur Hut" was inspired

It gets pretty damn cold in Winnipeg in winter. That's why they hold an annual Warming Huts competition that dots the frozen landscape with whimsical places to take shelter from the frigid temperatures. Architect Peter Hargraves started the project 12 years ago. Some structures remain, while others have been taken down, traveled to other cities, or simply melted away. All of them are spectacular.

“Ice Maze” from 2016 provides fun and a break from the wind.

2011’s “Woodpile” slowly consumed itself over the course of the season.

“Hygge House,” from 2013, puts comfort on display.

“Five Hole,” by Gehry Partners, melted at the end of the season.
