War and Pieced

In the painting by Thomas William Wood (above), Private Thomas Walker is shown sitting up in bed. Clean white bandages shroud his head, hiding scars from numerous surgeries to extract skull fragments from a wound sustained in the Crimean War. On the bed is  his bright red uniform, and a quilt the British soldier is stitching from the same wool fabric.
Wartime quilts made by British soldiers from their uniforms in the 18th and 19th centuries are very rare and create something beautiful from the horror of war.

War and Pieced: The Annette Gero Collection of Quilts from Military Fabrics continues through January 7, 2018 at the American Folk Art Museum in Manhattan
