Sixth Waldseemüller Globe Gore to Be Auctioned

Christie's will sell a previously unknown globe gore copy of Martin Waldseemüller’s 510-year-old map which has been dubbed "America's birth certificate" because it is the first to use the name for the New World. Gores are printed maps designed to be cut out and pasted onto spheres to form globes.

It is estimated to fetch between 600,000 pounds ($788,000) and 900,000 pounds ($1.2 million) in London on Dec. 13.
