Kazakhstani scientist, Ilya Ivanovich Ivanov, was a pioneer in the early 1900s in the field of artificial insemination. His controversial research involved the creation of human-ape hybrids, called humanzees. Fortunately early trials failed. Orango was an unfinished satirical opera about a fictional human ape sketched in 1932 by Dmitri Shostakovich that lampooned Ivanov’s ambitions, but it was not staged until 2011.
