This wonderful 1946 map, made by William Gropper, a U.S. cartoonist, painter, lithographer, and muralist, shows all of America's most famous folklore and myths in one gorgeous image. It includes real people who reached folkloric status as well as those who were invented in stories and song. Paul Bunyan, Johnny Appleseed, Rip Van Winkle, Brer Rabbit, Hiawatha, Roy Bean and more!
Gropper was a radical artist and, due to his involvement with radical politics in the 1920s and 1930s, he was called before the House Un-American Activities Committee in 1953.
