The tradition of paño (from the Spanish 'pañuelo' which means 'handkerchief') began in prisons in Western US sometime in the 1940s. Most of the artworks are tattoo-like images, some are religious, others are almost touchingly childish. All are drawn on muslin cloth with a ballpoint pen drawn by illiterate Mexican prisoners.
Artist and collector
Reno Leplat-Torti discovered the art of paños about five years ago and began collecting them. He now owns more than 200, which have been exhibited in galleries all around Europe.
