Paños, The Art of Chicano Prisoners

The tradition of paño (from the Spanish 'pañuelo' which means 'handkerchief') began in prisons in Western US sometime in the 1940s. Most of the artworks are tattoo-like images, some are religious,  others are almost touchingly childish. All are drawn on muslin cloth with a ballpoint pen drawn by illiterate Mexican prisoners.

Artist and collector Reno Leplat-Torti discovered the art of paños  about five years ago and began collecting them. He now owns more than 200, which have been exhibited in galleries all around Europe.
