Battle of the Beach Chairs

On a bank holiday in 1964 two rival youth subcultures arrived at Brighton Beach, England. Those of you who have seen the film Quadrophenia will be familiar with this story. The Mods were stylishly dressed and rode scooters, the Rockers wore studded leathers and rode motorcycles.  The two groups were sworn enemies and brawled whenever they encountered one another. The Rockers considered the seaside towns to be their turf so it was no surprise that mayhem occurred when the Mods arrived  at Brighton Beach over Whitsun weekend. Beach chairs and pebbles flew and there were hundreds of arrests.
