The historic villages of Shirakawa-gō and Gokayama in the Shogawa river valley in Japan are recognized as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The villages are known for their houses constructed in the style known as gasshō-zukuri or "prayer-hands construction" style. They have steeply pitched thatched roofs resembling two hands joined in prayer that allow the houses to withstand and shed the weight of the region's heavy snowfalls.
