This is an interesting story.
Robert Bereny (1887-1953) was a well-known Hungarian avant-garde painter. One of his more important works, Sleeping Lady with Black Vase, disappeared in Hungary in the 1920s.
In 2009 Hungarian art historian Gergely Barki sat down with his daughter Lola to watch American children's movie Stuart Little and was astonished to see Bereny's painting in one of the scenes. He recognized it from a black-and-white photograph taken of the work during its last exhibition, in 1928.
A set designer on the film had picked up the painting for a song at a Pasadena antiques shop. A private collector in Hungary bought the painting and it will be auctioned on December 13. The starting price is €110,000 ($136,930 USD).
