You can toss your Whisper 2000 because MIT researchers have found a better way to eavesdrop by extracting audio from videos of everyday objects. The technology is similar to the laser microphones used by spies to listen in on private conversations by measuring minute vibrations in reflective surfaces but no special equipment is required. The researchers were able to get sound from videos of things like a bag of chips and a houseplant.
