Gut-Churning Foods From Past CNEs

The Canadian National Exhibition (aka "The Ex") marks the end of summer in Toronto. With approximately 1.3 million visitors each year, the CNE is Canada’s largest annual fair and the seventh largest in North America. Most of the visitors can hardly wait to hit the Food Building and dig into such treats as Beaver Tails, Funnel Cakes, Tiny Tom Donuts, Nutella Fies, Deep Fried Mars Bars and Krispy Kreme Burgers. Each year new novelty items are offered, some are hits and others are misses. All of them will have you loosening your belt a notch or two.

The bacon-wrapped deep-fried Mars bar (above) from Bacon Nation was a hit in 2012. A bacon-free version has 400 calories. A single slice of bacon has about 43 calories. You do the math.

Last year's Cronut Burger was a colossal miss after more than 200 Ex visitors got sick after eating one. It was removed from the menu at EPIC Burgers and Waffles. In the end, the illnesses were linked to the bacon maple jam.

Edit: This year's showstoppers have been unveiled: chocolate fried chicken, liquid nitrogen sorbet, Thanksgiving dinner waffle and s'more bao. Get ready to dig in!

  2. Wine and inactivity did that to me. Just bought a treadmill and am easing into a routine with it. Won't give up my wine though

  3. Whoa...just looking at that stuff would send me off to the 'the throne'!!
I relate to the wine & inactivity Nag. I now have my stationary bike...slow & easy I keep telling myself.
As for the wine...what would be the point if not for the enjoyment of a beautiful red wine.

  4. It snowed so much last winter and was bitter cold so I cocooned for months. The treadmill is not as punishing as I thought it would be. I listen to audio books and the half hour goes by quickly.
