Psalterium Sancti Ruperti

How small can a book be so that one is still able to read it? The pages of Psalterium Sancti Ruperti at the library foundation of St. Peter in Salzburg are only 37 x 31 mm in size – the face of the text was required to be precisely 33 x 25 mm and composed of 18 lines. The font size is 1.5mm with a maximal line-spacing of only 1.2mm.

This miniature devotional book shows evidence of frequent handling and appears to have been made for practical use and not as a status symbol.

  1. The commandment is "thou shalt not covet," yet I see this psaltet and boy oh boy do I find myself covetous. They can keep all the porsches and Ferraris and giant bank accounts if I can have the manuscripts....maybe that's not as bad. Lol
