The Russia Left Behind

On the jarring, 12-hour drive from St. Petersburg to Moscow, another Russia comes into view, one where people struggle with problems that belong to past centuries.

Aleksandr Chertkov repaired his vehicle near the village of Chernaya Gryaz, which is
known for its prostitutes and, equally, for televised police raids on prostitution.
The women are mostly shop workers recruited from provincial cities, who waver

has undergone a swift and lustrous renovation.
President Vladimir V. Putin has a vacation home next door.
