Around the time of World War II, the land was used as a refuge for evacuees who brought their pets with them to the island. The population numbered 655 people in 1960. However, as more and more people left the secluded island for work on the mainland, they deserted their homes and their pets, allowing hordes of house cats to fend for themselves on the empty streets.
Recently the island has become a tourist destination for cat loving people who want to feed and take photos of the kitties.
