Undocumented Migration Project

Research has shown that the U.S. immigration enforcement strategy known as Prevention through Deterrence [PTD] has failed to deter migration, but has led to violence and suffering for those entering the US at unauthorized border crossings. Based at the University of Michigan, the Undocumented Migration Project (UMP) is a long-term anthropological study of undocumented migration between Mexico and the United States.
  • Undocumented immigrants in the United States: 11 million
  • Would-be immigrants apprehended daily at the border south of Tucson: 330
  • Artifacts collected for the Undocumented Migration Project: more than 10,000
