Saint Gertrude of Nivelles is apparently the patron saint of cats, the insane and gardeners! How crazy is that? She's a girl after my own heart.
Thanks to my friend Libby for pointing me to this link.
Wait a minute, the Catholic Encyclopedia says, “The towns of Geertruidenberg, Breda, and Bergen-op-Zoom in North Brabant honour her as patron. She is also patron of travellers, and is invoked against fever, rats, and mice, particularly field-mice.” Somebody is assuming cats, and lord knows where crazy gardeners comes from.
I cross checked with a number of sites. All say she is the patron saint of cats, most say she also favours gardeners and several including this one: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gertrude_of_Nivelles say she watches over the insane as well. Busy lady!
