Pigeon Post.

It's not exactly like the days of the now extinct passenger pigeon but it's sort of cool for a message that doesn't have to be delivered ASAP.

Send your message in a plastic pigeon envelope, put the stamps on it, and pop it in the mail box.

Well If Neil Says It's Okay...

“After years together, he handed her a book. It was her favorite book, “Neverwhere” by Neil Gaiman. She opened to the first page to find a note.“Hello Ashley… Out of interest, what would you say to marrying Brad? – Neil Gaiman” And just like that, they were engaged.”

Extreme Shepherding

I'm probably the last person in the world to have seen this viral video. It's a commercial produced by Samsung to advertise LED TVs. The sheep are fitted with LED lights and herded to create a fireworks display, a version of the Mona Lisa and a game of pong. Great choreography!

Thanks Donald!

The Choctaws Sent Famine Aid To The Irish in 1847

This is a story I'd never heard before. In 1847 a group of Choctaw Indians collected $170 and forwarded it to a U.S. organization that was collecting funds for Irish potato famine relief.

Only 16 years before, President Andrew Jackson, the son of Irish immigrants, seized the lands of the Chickasaw, Cherokee, Creek, Seminole, and Choctaw and forced them on a 500-mile trek to Oklahoma known as the Trail of Tears. Of the 21,000 Choctaws who started the journey, more than half perished from exposure, malnutrition, and disease.

Both the Choctaw and the Irish were victims of conquest that led to loss of property, forced migration and exile, mass starvation, and cultural suppression (most notably language).

A plaque on Dublin’s Mansion House which honors the Choctaw contribution reads:
“Their humanity calls us to remember the millions of human beings throughout our world today who die of hunger and hunger-related illness in a world of plenty.

The town of Viganella in the Italian Alps receives no direct sun for 83 days each year. So in 2006 mayor Pierfranco Midali commissioned a 26-by-16-foot mirror to be placed on a nearby mountainside at 3,600 feet. Tracking the sun with computer-controlled motors, the mirror throws light into the town square for six hours each day.

What Make Hulk Angry?

HulkOutList: Every reason that Dr. David Banner was driven to Hulk out. Here are just a few of the 131 things that drove him over the edge:
19. Being pushed down a mountainside by a bigfoot impersonator
20. Dealing with a pesky operator in a phone booth ("I DON'T HAVE TWENTY-FIVE
CENTS!!!")
31. Being caught taking photos of toughs committing monkey business in the
restaurant, and then being beaten up and thrown under a table
32. Getting his jacket caught in the printwheels at the newspaper printing room,
and then inexplicably sticking his hand into the rollers
60. Being stuck in the police department's voice mail system when he knows his
friend is about to be the next lobotomy subject, only to have the police finally
pick up the phone after he's turning into the Hulk
128. Trying to help the sweet old lady with her robbery, only to have one of her
mean friends chain him up and throw him into the bay. (Leads to an underwater
hulkout!)

Vodka is the tonic

Cleo, a ten week old American staffordshire pup,  licked radiator fluid off spare car parts in a garage last week and was poisoned by it. Her owner rushed her to the vet who hooked her up to one of his Christmas gifts, a bottle of vodka.

Animal Accident and Emergency Point Cook vet Dr Yenny Indrawirawan said the "hair of the dog" treatment, which cost more than $2100, was rare but effective.
"The alcohol stops a chemical reaction in the body," Dr Indrawirawan said. "Without the vodka, Cleo was likely to develop renal failure."
Ms Zammit said the pup had recovered and beaten her hangover the same way we do.
"She slept a lot and she was eating a lot, but she seems really happy now."

Payback

In October 2009, California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger attended a local Democratic Party fundraiser at the invitation of former San Francisco mayor Willie Brown. His speech was heckled by San Francisco assemblyman Tom Ammiano, who took the stage afterward to criticize the governor.

Three weeks later, Schwarzenegger vetoed a measure sponsored by Ammiano. He attached this message:

To the Members of the California State Assembly:

I am returning Assembly Bill 1176 without my signature.

For some time now I have lamented the fact that major issues are overlooked while many
unnecessary bills come to me for consideration. Water reform, prison reform, and health
care are major issues my Administration has brought to the table, but the Legislature just
kicks the can down the alley.
Yet another legislative year has come and gone without the major reforms Californians
overwhelmingly deserve. In light of this, and after careful consideration, I believe it is
unnecessary to sign this measure at this time.
Sincerely,

Arnold Schwarzenegger
