Maine Bus Makeover

Portland, ME-based architect Will Winkelman of Winkelman Architecture restored this 1959 Chevrolet Viking short bus. I would like to take a road trip in it.

  1. A quality piece. I'll take it!

I've known a few bus-dwellers in my day, My brother used to live in a 1966 Bedford bus, of the same type as the Beatles' Magical Mystery Tour bus. It was fully fitted out inside as a home, had been owned by a rock band before him. Cosy with a wood-burning stove, but with a tail the length of a car behind the rear axle, it was a bit tricky on country lanes. Had to watch out for sideswiping parked cars...
He kicks himself for ever selling it, because an upsurge of interest in the beatles makes the rare Bedford Val Panoramas valuable collectors pieces now.

  2. You don't have to tell me about the challenges involved in driving large vehicles on narrow country roads. On our recent trip to Ireland Hertz upgraded us to an SUV. Big mistake! Driving on the other side of the road compounded the problem. For the first 10 days I ended up cringing in the back seat behind Mr. Nag. I must say he took it all in stride even though the gear shift was on the left side.
