France Gall & Serge Gainsbourg - The story behind "Les Sucettes"

Who would be surprised to find out that Serge Gainsbourg was a dirty old man? Not I.

  1. I don't know if you're aware, in Canada, of the ongoing scandal sparked by revelations of the hidden behaviour of the late Sir Jimmy Savile?
He was always a weird, somewhat creepy characted, but he was a tireless champion for the disposessed, for children in homes, for the disabled, the elderly, for mental-health patients. During his life, I never heard so much as a whisper against him.
Then, a year after his death, it all unravelled, the people who came forward accusing him of inappropriate touching, sex with underage girls. It became apparent that shows like 'Top of the Pops were treated by him as a candy-jar of willing young girls.

It's also clear that most of his victims were willing, they were bedazzled by his celebrity.
It becomes clear that there were concerns in his lifetime, but his good deeds made him appear unassailable, it would be,to perhaps, career suicide to stand up and accuse him. So nobody did. His death and funeral were those of a popular saint.
Parks, buildings, paths, were named after him, wings of hospitals, cancer units, bore his name. Charities.
Now his granite memorial is removed, smashed in pieces by his own family. No plaques, renaming all around. Nobody wants to boast of knowing him any more.

And the question we all ask is "How can this be true? how could we all have trusted him? How could such a cover-up have existed?

And now, the lens shifts, looking for his known associates. Who else shared the candy-store?

Serge Gainsbourg? He's always been an ugly, creepy man. Why did so many beautiful young women fall for him? Ugh.

  2. Soubriquet, we were in Ireland for a few weeks when the Savile story broke and it dominated the news there. On our way back home we joked that we could finally escape the Savile story. Alas it has also been in the news here so I am unfortunately very familiar with that particular scandal. I agree that Gainsbourg was ugly and creepy and also rather reptilian. What was the attraction?
