Playing With Matches

I have a friend from Cleveland Ohio whose dad made a living creating matchbook covers. Back in the day he'd always have a bowl of interesting matches that we could take home with us. So I always had exotic matches from Dubai or Hong Kong or Paris to fire up a reefer.
Collectors Weekly has a post on “feature matches” which had advertising art on their covers as well as the matches themselves. They went up in smoke when cigarettes became déclassé.

More matches here.

  1. Actually, personalized matchbooks disappeared when DUI law enforcement escalated in the nineties. The arresting officers would often check for custom matches, and then go issue a citation to the bar for letting someone intoxicated drive.
