The House That Beer Built



The HEINEKEN WOBO  was a beer bottle that could be used as a glass brick. 100,000 of these WOrld BOttles were produced in 1963.  Unfortunately the idea stalled and a shed at the Heineken estate and a wall made of WOBO at the Heineken Museum in Amsterdam are the only structures where the ‘beer brick’ was used.

  1. Single layer brickwork is inherently weak. A good wall needs 2 thicknesses bound together with some bricks laid edgeways. You can't do that with these. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brickwork

  2. I guess that's why it didn't progress past the concept stage. I love the way it looks though and that building a WOBO structure would give me an excuse to drink lots of beer.
