The cards & letters will slip behind the shutter. The bookend is not strong enough to hold that kind of weight; it will sag. Oh, and by the way, how many cards and letters do you actually receive? I haven't had one in years.
One place I worked had a machine with two rolls of plastic which would hot laminate a piece of paper. If I laminated a color picture printed on shiny paper, like a magazine page, then peeled it apart and washed the remaining paper off, I’d end up with a color transparency. Pictures of stained glass pieces, and Playboy pages, were favorites.
Sue, I don't get many letters but I do get lots of bills, invitations etc. that make my desktop look untidy. The individual slats could be easily sealed on the bottom with that gummy bear type weatherstripping to prevent slippage. You're probably right about the shelves but they look nice in the photo.
