For almost half a century, Don Ritchie would approach people contemplating suicide at the edge of The Gap, just 50 metres from his home in Watsons Bay, his palms facing up.
Mr Ritchie told his daughter Sue Ritchie Bereny he would smile and say: "Is there something I could do to help you?"
Local hero, Don Ritchie stopped at least 160 people from jumping to their deaths from the cliffs of The Gap near his home in Australia. He recently passed away at the age of 86.

Wonderful! Thanks Marilyn. He's an inspiration. I like the inclusion of "with his palms up" because it is practical, showing that he was not aggressive, but open to the person.
