RIP Eastenders' Pat Butcher

I haven't watched Eastenders in years but Pat Butcher was one of my favourite characters. Hip hop artist Jester Jacobs honours her with a 7-minute tribute.

“The words you are about to hear were not written, they poured out of my soul. Most of this was done in one take since the emotion is still so raw.”

  1. Agh.
East Enders. The sister-in-law watches that crap.
Gets snarky if anybody gets in the way, or talks, or breathes.
And why? Why do people behave as if it's real?

    Gah.

    Blurk.

  2. I used to watch it years ago but then switched to Coronation Street. I was hooked on Corrie for a number of years and it always surprised me to find that the most unlikely of my friends or coworkers were likewise addicted. Mr. Nag informs me that there are closet Corrie fans at the Toronto Fire Department as well. I believe they (we) are evenly distributed throughout Canadian society. If you are not a fan you will never understand the attraction. One day I went cold turkey. I got rid of conventional tv and now only watch Netflix. It was goodbye Corrie and I don't miss it at all. However I will be in London in February and may do a bit of a backslide while I'm there.

  3. Oh now.
Out of the frying pan into the fire.

    You compound your crimes.
And to think there are Toronto firemen glued to the fictional happenings of Coronation Street.
    I shudder.

I see you don't mention Emmerdale? Is that transmitted over there too? I live in the midst of Emmerdale filming territory. A few years ago, we had an old weaving mill that was due for demolition, and Emmerdale... or was it Heartbeat? one of them wanted to stage a big fire/explosion/rescue drama there, it was handy for them, their studios and base are only half a mile up the road, but our chairman turned it down. Boo.

  4. When my sons were younger and lived at home they mocked me for watching Coronation Street but after a while I would catch them sneaking glances at the tv when the show was on. I suspect the powers behind Corrie are broadcasting some subliminal message and I'd advise you to keep your eyes averted if you come upon it lest you too become converted.

  5. Subliminal Advertising....

Did you ever watch the 1980s t.v.series "Max Headroom"... It was set "twenty minutes into the future", an investigative reporter was looking into a mystery rise in reports of spontaneous human combustion. All the victims were found with the tv tuned to one particular channel. It turns out that this channel has been experimenting with high-density ultra short subliminal advertising... "Blipverts"
See too many blipverts and you overload and self combust.

I'm safe from all soaps as I have no television.

  6. It's a good thing I didn't watch tv in the 70s and much of the 80s or I might have overloaded and self combusted.
I no longer watch television because I couldn't stand the commercials. We were paying a fortune on monthly cable charges and yet rarely could we find anything we wanted to watch. Now we just watch mostly international films, documentaries and a couple of tv series (Mad Men and Breaking Bad).

  7. It's been a while since I watched Eastenders also but always loved Pat.

I am also surprised by some people I know who watch Coronation St.

WE are huge Corrie Street watchers. At the moment hubby is busy catching up on the episodes we missed while on vacation.

  8. I'm not crazy about this type of music but this song tells Pat's whole life story. It's quite brilliant.
